You can climb Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak at 4,167 m, in two days from Marrakech. You trek from Imlil to a mountain refuge on day one, then summit and descend on day two. It needs good fitness but no technical climbing in the main summer and autumn seasons.

What the 2-day route looks like Day 1: Marrakech to the Toubkal refuge. Your driver takes you from Marrakech to Imlil, the village at the foot of the mountain, at about 1,740 m. From there you walk up the Ait Mizane valley with a guide, past walnut trees and small villages, to the refuge at around 3,200 m. Mules carry the heavy bags. Plan on roughly 5 to 6 hours of walking. Day 2: Summit and return. You start early, before sunrise if you can, and climb the rocky path to the summit in about 3 to 4 hours. After the views, you return to the refuge for lunch and then descend to Imlil. The total day is long, often 8 to 10 hours of walking, and the driver brings you back to Marrakech in the evening. How hard is it? The route is a steep, high-altitude hike, not a climb. The challenges are the altitude, the loose stones and the length of day 2. Some people feel headaches or tiredness above 3,500 m. A normal level of fitness and some hill-walking practice are enough for most people. If you want a gentler pace, choose a longer itinerary with an extra night. When to go Spring and autumn: The most comfortable seasons, with clear paths and mild days. Summer: Good for the high mountain, but start early to avoid the afternoon heat. Winter: Snow and ice change the climb. You need winter gear and experienced guides. See our winter Toubkal trek. Always check mountain conditions before you go. Weather can change quickly at altitude. What to pack Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots Layers: base layer, fleece and a windproof jacket Hat, gloves and sunglasses, even in summer A headlamp for the early start 2 to 3 litres of water capacity and snacks Sun cream and a small first-aid kit Trekking poles, which help a lot on the descent Do you need a guide? We strongly recommend one. A local guide knows the weather, the paths and the pace that suits your group, and can make safe decisions if conditions change. Regulations can change, so check the current rules before you travel. Booking with a local team also supports families in the Imlil valley. Frequently asked questions How long does it take to climb Toubkal? Two days is the shortest option: about 5 to 6 hours of walking on day 1 and 8 to 10 hours on day 2. Is Toubkal dangerous? In the main seasons, it is a demanding hike rather than a technical climb. Altitude, weather and fatigue are the main risks, which is why guides and preparation matter. Can beginners climb Toubkal? Fit beginners can, with a guide and good preparation. If you are unsure, choose a longer trek with an extra day to acclimatise. Where do you sleep? In a mountain refuge near the base of the summit, usually in shared dorm rooms. Ready to climb? Our Mount Toubkal 2-day trek starts at €180, with a local guide and transfers from Marrakech.
